# Introduction to Octave

Octave is a scientific programming language well known among the engineers. This open source project is published under GNU license and has large cross platform compatibility (Windows, Linux and macOS). Octave is a vectors and matrices orientated scripting language, which makes it a well suitable tool for the prototyping and testing of new algorithms. Well known algorithms with high-performance implementation are available in large set of libraries. Matlab is the commercial brother of Octave, it aims on Windows users and has mostly similar syntax to Octave.
